If you’re willing to look closely, you’ll definitely find all the material you need to make those metaphors happen in your mind, but at the film’s Fantastic Fest premiere, McDonagh himself called it “a simple break-up story,” an exploration of what might happen to two men if one simply decided to cut ties with the other. With that in mind, it would be easy to look to Martin McDonagh’s phenomenal The Banshees of Inisherin as some kind of fable, a dark fairy tale from a faraway time and place meant to cast long, shadowy metaphors over our own lives. There are a lot of films about sudden violence, but you don’t see as many feature-length explorations of straightforward, person-to-person departures. But this fear is quieter, simpler and, therefore, less-often discussed in the wider cultural landscape. It lives somewhere in each of us in the same vicinity as the fear that, someday, inexplicable and motive-less violence will descend on us and our loved ones-a little knot of dread waiting to unspool. Whether we wear it on our sleeves or bury it somewhere down in the darkest part of ourselves, we all carry the fear that someday someone we trust and love will simply decide to abandon us. Stars: Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon, Barry Keoghan The Banshees of Inisherin Release Date: October 21, 2022 That the end of Kubrick’s odyssey returns us to the beginning only reaffirms that purpose: We are, and have always been, the navigators of our destiny. So much more than a speculative document about the human race colonizing the Solar System, 2001 asks why we do what we do-why, against so many oppositional forces, seen and otherwise, do we push outward, past the fringes of all that we know, all that we ever need to know? Amidst long shots of bodies sifting through space, of vessels and cosmonauts floating silently through the unknown, Kubrick finds grace-aided, of course, by an epic classical soundtrack we today can’t extricate from Kubrick’s indelible images-and in grace he finds purpose: If we can transcend our terrestrial roots with curiosity and fearlessness, then we should. And yet, despite its ambitious leaps and barely comprehensible scope, every lofty symbolic gesture Kubrick matches with a moment of intimate humanity: the sadness of a mighty intellect’s death the shock of cold-blooded murder the minutiae and boredom of keeping our bodies functioning on a daily basis the struggle and awe of encountering something we can’t explain the unspoken need to survive, never questioned because it will never be answered. Clarke (whose novel, conceived alongside the screenplay, saw release not long after the film’s premiere), 2001: A Space Odyssey begins with the origins of the human race and ends with the dawn of whatever comes after us-spinning above our planet, god-like, a seemingly all-knowing, hopefully benevolent fifth-dimensional space fetus-spanning countless light years and millennia between. Stars: Keir Dullea, Gary Lockwood, Douglas Rain, William Sylvesterįifty years ago, Stanley Kubrick told the story of everything-of life, of the universe, of pain and loss and the way reality and time changes as we, these insignificant voyagers, sail through it all, attempting to change it all, unsure if we’ve changed anything. Here are the 50 best movies on HBO Max right now: You’ll find a lot of French gems here, not to mention an essential selection of documentaries, silent films, sci-fi staples, psychedelic monster movies, musicals and every shade of Oscar bait in between. Welcome HBO Max: You get a piece of us too. Whereas once these streaming services represented a more accessible alternative to an overpriced cable TV package, now we’re given no alternative, even though pretty much every movie imaginable is available for us to watch right now. Even Hayao Miyazaki, notoriously against having his movies available on streaming services, finally gave in. Like most other streaming services that aren’t owned by, say, the House of Mouse, there is no real overarching theme to what HBO Max presents, which is exactly why HBO Max represents such a powerful urge to just roll over and let it all happen. Basically, it’s like Criterion Channel Lite in some of its more highbrow corners. Ostensibly, this is a good thing: Below you’ll find masterpiece after masterpiece from the likes of Stanley Kubrick, Agnes Varda, Alfred Hitchcock, David Lynch, Barbara Kopple, Jacques Demy, Akira Kurosawa, the Maysles, Pennebaker, Ingmar Bergman-those looking for a crash course in world cinema can pretty much single-handedly thank Turner Classic Movies’ folding under the HBO banner for the bounties they’re about to inhale. The best movies on HBO Max reflect nothing if not the culmination of our streaming dystopia.

For example, "write rent check," "set vet appointment," and "read Pomodoro article" could go together in one session. Any tasks that will take less than one Pomodoro should be combined with other simple tasks. Sticking to this rule will help ensure you make clear progress on your projects. If a task requires more than four pomodoros, it needs to be divided into smaller, actionable steps. Set your timer for 25 minutes, and focus on a single task until the timer rings. Though Cirillo went on to write a 130-page book about the method, its biggest strength is its simplicity: Encouraged by the challenge, he found a tomato (pomodoro in Italian) shaped kitchen timer, and the Pomodoro technique was born. Feeling overwhelmed, he asked himself to commit to just 10 minutes of focused study time. Cirillo was struggling to focus on his studies and complete assignments. The Pomodoro Technique was developed in the late 1980s by then university student Francesco Cirillo. Take the quiz Explore on your own What is the Pomodoro Technique? (The tournament moved back to its original Stamford home this year. He even entered his first ACPT because of its convenient Brooklyn location. It reached to roughly the height of a kitchen table. When he was starting out, he kept a stack of hard-copy puzzles he’d done in his apartment. The city was central to fostering his crossword mastery: He did crosswords on the subway and in the orchestra pit when he was working an off-Broadway show. Feyer started puzzling in earnest after seeing the crossword documentary “ Wordplay” in the fall of 2007. By his back-of-the-envelope calculations, he’s spent “just” 4,000 hours of his life solving. And Dan Feyer has done lots of crosswords. The only way to get good at crosswords is to do lots of crosswords. It was like a year later I was like, ‘Ooh! Those were the Saturday puzzles.’” Feyer had “a book of New York Times daily puzzles, and like every sixth one I wasn’t really finishing. Crosswords are well known to get tougher as the week goes on. I didn’t understand different constructors, I didn’t even really know the day of the week,” he said. But as recently as 2006, he was oblivious to any of their finer points, he said. Although the damper appears to be designed as a heat sink, the thermally conductive interface between the glass bulb and aluminum fins is woefully inadequate for the device to function as such. Lower midrange frequencies are bland acute dynamics tend to be "rounded" without energetic attack and decay high frequencies are well-represented, but lack many of the intangibles that give a sense of live performance. These dampers reduce tube microphonics, but the sonic result is poor. (Because Allnic Absorb-Gel Dampers damp vibrations under the tube pins, the benefits are minimal compared to damping the socket directly contacting the tube pins.) In almost all cases though, Herbie's damping instruments provide optimal results without having to worry about damping the sockets.Ĭool Damper by EAT (Euro Audio Team): Herbie's Audio Lab has tested this fine-looking tube damper and found it to be a bust. Damping the socket and tube both can be mutually effective placing a ring of Permatex Blue Silicone Gasket Maker (available at auto parts stores) around tube sockets dampens them quite effectively, without the drawback of having an additional set of pins/sockets for each tube, keeping a more direct electronic signal intact. We have found that damping tube sockets can sometimes be effective at reducing microphonics, but damping the bulb glass is much more effective and the results more consistent amongst various tubes and components. Other manufacturers make brass or copper sleeves and deceptively imply that they are tube "coolers." They are not.Ībsorb-Gel (Allnic): These are extension sockets with a gel material inside. Our tests with brass Tube Anchors resulted in fairly cool-running input/driver tubes running an average of 33.8º F hotter than without Anchors. Massive brass clamped around a tube, however, deprives the glass bulb of air ventilation needed for cooling. Tube Anchors/Brass Rings: Though awkward to work with, Tube Anchors by MapleShade are excellent sonically, the only dampers we have tested that play in the same league as our damping instruments. They're not bad dampers overall though, delivering an overall pleasant result. Though sonically competitive with Herbie's original PTFE HAL-O tube dampers, these tube rings lack the punch, microdynamic speed, and nuance of Herfbie's newer damping instruments. To keep tubes from overheating, they should be placed near the top of the tubes where they are sometimes least effective. Here are some observations we've made:ĭuende Criatura Tube Rings: Although these European rings are great at bringing out a sense of detail and clarity, they don't fully reveal the deeper "texture" of each note, and lower/mid frequencies seem a bit thin at times. Reference: “Multiple observations of Bigfin Squid ( Magnapinna sp.) in the Great Australian Bight reveal distribution patterns, morphological characteristics, and rarely seen behaviour” by Deborah Osterhage, Hugh MacIntosh, Franziska Althaus and Andrew Ross, 11 November 2020, PLOS ONE. A trope mainly seen in fantasy: a character or creature is gifted with huge ears, possibly as large as their body. These sightings add to our knowledge of this elusive and intriguing genus, and reinforce the value of imagery as a tool in deep-sea squid research. The authors have described fine-scale habitat, in-situ coloration, and behavioral components including a horizontal example of the ‘elbow’ pose, and coiling of distal filaments: a behavior not previously seen in squid. Squid of a juvenile size were also recorded and are confirmed to possess the long distal filaments which have thus far been mostly missing from specimens due to damage. In terms of morphology, previous in-situ measurements have been roughly based on nearby objects of known size, but this study used paired lasers visible on the body of a Magnapinna squid, providing a more accurate scaling of size. In 1954 Smithsonian researchers dissected this squid specimen from the stomach of a lancetfish and added it to the Museum’s squid collection. Little is known about the big fin squid as no adult specimens have. These cephalopods are usually found thousands of meters under the sea’s surface, in underexplored waters across the globe. Bigfin squid are a group of cephalopods in the genus Magnapinna and family Magnapinnidae. Morphological differences indicate each sighting is of an individual rather than multiple sightings of the same squid. Five squids from the Magnapinna genus, known as bigfins for their distinctive flappy fins, were spotted in deep-sea surveys over the course of three years off southern Australia. As most previous observations have been of single Magnapinna squid these multiple sightings have been quite revealing, being found in close spatial and temporal proximity of each other. These represent the first records of Bigfin Squid in Australian waters, and more than double the known records from the southern hemisphere, bolstering a hypothesis of cosmopolitan distribution. Little is known of their biology and ecology as most specimens are damaged and juvenile, and in-situ sightings are sparse, numbering around a dozen globally.Īs part of a recent large-scale research program in the Great Australian Bight, Remotely Operated Vehicles and a towed camera system were deployed in depths of 946–3258 m resulting in five Magnapinna sp. One of the most remarkable groups of deep-sea squids is the Magnapinnidae, known for their large fins and strikingly long arm and tentacle filaments. |
